2024 Vice President Poll Results
NEW YORK- Hampton students questioned J.D. Vance’s recent post-vice presidential debate poll win after Vance manipulated the idea and importance of family throughout his responses Tuesday night.
For the first half of the debate, Vice presidential candidates Tim Walz and J.D. Vance were asked about the issues of immigration. When commentator Margaret Brennan asked Vance about dividing immigrant families, he referred back to his mother's drug issue.
“ I had a mother who struggled with opioid addiction and has gotten clean. I don't want people who are struggling with addiction to be deprived of their second chance because Kamala Harris let fentanyl into our communities at record levels. So you’ve got to stop the bleeding,” Vance said.
Vance used the same story when he accepted the nominee for vice president at the Republican National Convention in 2024 and a recent memoir about his upbringing around poverty and drugs that received high praise according to CBS News.
“ I’m proud to say that tonight, my mom is here, 10 years clean and sober. I love you, Mom,” Vance said during his vice president nominee speech.
J.D. Vance was asked to provide a political view of whether the Trump campaign supported or opposed the idea of women having an abortion in the 9th month of pregnancy. Instead of Vance answering the questions with facts, he answered with a short story.
“ And, you know, I grew up in a working-class family in a neighborhood where I knew a lot of young women who had unplanned pregnancies and decided to terminate those pregnancies because they felt like they didn't have any other options. And, you know, one of them is very dear to me. And I know she’s watching tonight, I love you. And she told me something a couple of years ago that she felt like if she hadn’t had that abortion, that it would have destroyed her life because she was in an abusive relationship,” Vance said
38% of viewers felt as though Vance didn’t deliberate enough regarding the topic of Abortion and what that would look like under Turmp's plan according to a CBS News Poll. However, 37% feel as though Vance defended their running mate's views better according to CNN voting polls.
“I don't think that you know being able to use big words and speak fast makes you a better debater,” India’Ray Davis, a Hampton University student said.
Vance's aggressive, strong, and Trump-like antics are what makes him a bold debater to go up against according to The New York Times.
During the second half of the debate, commentator Nora O'Donnell raised the question about holding parents responsible for school shooters and what should be done to prevent the issue. Vance answered the question to highlight the joy of sending kids off to school.
“ Look, I want to just sort of speak as a father of three beautiful little kids, and our oldest is now in second grade. And like a lot of parents, we send our kids to school with such hope and such joy and such pride at their little faces on the first day of school,” Vance said.
As Vance continued to answer, he mentioned that “we” must pour more investments into better security guards, install stronger windows, and learn how to lock doors. Yet, neglecting the fact that instilling these new tactics won’t force shooters to put their guns down.
“ I feel like if a shooter really wants to shoot, they’re going to find a way to shoot, like, they really are. And how are you going to get a better window, bulletproof it?” Asia Tores, a Hampton University student said.
As the debate came to an end, commentator Margaret Brennan asked Vance for his final remarks to end Vance's segment. Vance referenced the previous energy topic and introduced his grandmother to the equation.
“ And one of the issues we didn’t talk about was energy. And I rember when I was being raised by my grandmother, when she didn’t have enough money to turn on the heat some nights because Ohio gets cold at night and becasued money was often very tight,” Vance said
Joyus children smiles, sober mothers, dear friends, and penniless grandmothers still didn’t convince Hampton Students that Vance deserved the overall Vice President poll win.
